YouTube decided to remove ‘overlay ads’

YouTube, the video streaming giant owned by Google has officially announced the removal of its overlay ads from the platform from April 6, 2023. Overlay ads are one of the popular advertising formats for desktop users that are placed on the top of the screen. On the YouTube help forum, Google said, “Starting on April 6th, 2023, the “Overlay ads” ad format will no longer appear on YouTube to help improve the viewer experience and shift engagement to higher performing ad formats on desktop and mobile devices.” However, they have also confirmed that the change is not going to affect the creators of the platform. It added, “Overlay ads are a legacy ad format that only served on desktop and are disruptive for viewers. We expect to see a limited impact for most Creators as engagement shifts to other ad formats.”

 

What other forms of ads are offered by YouTube?

 

YouTube is trying to focus on more pre, mid, and post-video ads which can be considered as a great substitute for the overlay ads. The overlay banner ads have already been removed from mobile devices and streaming players. And now, these ads will be removed from all kinds of formats and devices. Previously, these ads would redirect users to an external page after clicking on it. Here are some other types of ads on YouTube that you can use,

 

·   Skippable Video Ads – These kinds of ads will play either before the video starts or during it is being streamed. Usually, viewers can skip such ads after 5 seconds. 

·   Non-skippable Video Ads – These ads are required to watch completely in order to proceed with watching the main video. Such ads cannot be skipped and they usually last 15-30 seconds. 

·   Display Ads – These ads appear on the right of the feature video in the case of desktops and mobile as well. Such ads do not hamper video streaming but always appear on the top of the recommended videos.

·   Bumper Ads – These ads are also non-skippable however, in this case, it only lasts around 5 to 6 seconds. 

·   Sponsored Cards – These ads usually show promotional products on the screen while the video is being played. 

 

It will interesting to witness whether YouTube brings more features for the other types of ads or not. But it definitely seems like a great change for the viewers who want to enjoy a better experience without paying for an ad-free premium account on YouTube. 

 

So, what is YouTube assuring with this change?

 

Earlier this month, YouTube blocked any new posts and comments on the English Help Forum and changed it to read-only mode, which means the platform is already preparing for its coming changes. YouTube’s Help Page states, “Unfortunately, many posts are irrelevant for user-based conversation, and many questions remain unaddressed. Our Objective is to make this a useful area for all of you, so we’ll be utilizing this time and these trials to shape the long-term plan for this forum – more to come, we promise!”
